I discovered my love of vocal performance by pure accident and sheer bravery.

 

I'm 12 years old, accidentally placed into a middle school choir class, and there is a live, in-person audition for the solo on the second day. The teacher encourages the class to come audition after a sitzprobe. My best friend and I are hiding strategically in the back row so as to not garner unwanted attention, when she suddenly elbows me-

"You know, I heard you sing that- you HAVE to audition."

​

No amount of quiet fussing and distress could stop her from raising her hand and loudly volunteering me for the solo- much to the teacher's joy, and much to the class's entertainment.

I timidly swallow the lump in my throat and walk to the front of the semi-circle risers containing all my classmates as they giggle and whisper amongst each other. The sweat begins to bead down my armpits. I take my place, and when the piano starts, I make the brilliant social move of slamming my eyes shut and turning my back to face the wall. The class giggles.

And then I sing.

And when I finished, something clicked -- like a light switch.
